EMBRACING CONFLICT

Embracing conflict may seem a far fetched idea, because many of us avoid conflict as often as possible.  Most of us have never learned the skills to communicate conflicting perspectives in a constructive, cooperative or compassionate way, so we can feel overwhelmed and unsettled in conflict situations.  Because conflict can become very uncomfortable and even heated, it often seems safer to side step it, rather than face it.

The problem with avoidance is that bad feelings and different perspectives don’t just go away. They can simmer beneath the surface and can ooze out, even when we are trying to keep them in check. Conflict can also raise its head in a particularly ugly way if we are tired, stressed or overwhelmed.

Since I have been studying NVC (Non Violent Communication) also known as Compassionate Communication, I have been looking at conflict in a different way. I am not quite so scared of it any more. I am beginning to see that conflict gives us all an opportunity to see things from different perspectives and to understand someone else’s needs and concerns.

It is not easy to wade into the waters of disagreement, but with new strategies and skills and insight it is doable. Also there is much to learn about ourselves and others if we do. If you are interested and want to know more please send me an email and we can chat.
